Topic: Program look and feel, compression format, encryption
Hi Alie,
a few suggestions to make ActiveFile even better:
1) Select files with the # key
Now that the pencil key on Nokia phones is extinct, what about using the # key to mark files and folders? That's how things work in Symbian's own file manager, and everywhere else all over the Symbian S60 interface.
The command shortcut screen lets me configure the keys 0-9 and *, but it won't let me do anything with the # button.
2) Toggle panes with the right softkey
Switching panes with the number keys means that you have to remember which number button switches panes. Not a problem for you, since you know all the ins and outs of ActiveFile, but what about people with a few dozen programs on their phone? They're not going to memorize the functions of the number keys.
At the same time I have no less than three ways to exit ActiveFile. The right softkey, the last option of the options menu, and the red hangup button.
Three ways to exit a program is a bit overdone, so maybe the right softkey can be made more flexible? Some people want it to close the program, I want it to toggle panes, someone else on this forum proposed to use the key to send the program to the background... the best answer to this is to let the user choose the function of the right softkey.
3) Optional X-plore-like folder view
One thing I like about X-plore is the way folders cascade into a tree-like view. This makes it easy to manage files in different folders on the same screen. What about adding a choice to the settings screen of ActiveFile: "classic folder view or X-plore-like folder view?"
4) Custom font size
The font size for file and folder names is quite big. Too big for my taste. I'd rather use smaller letters so that I can fit more files and folders on my tiny 240x320 pixel screen. So what about adding a font size option to the settings menu?
5) Selecting many files at once
In the S60 file manager, music player, Notes application, message folders, Contacts manager, etc. you can select multiple entries by holding the selection button down and scrolling up and down. Sounds like a good idea for ActiveFile too.
6) Zip
ActiveFile uses the .gz compression format. What about using the "standard" .zip format? Every device that can hande compressed files can handle .zip, so it would make sharing compressed files and folders between different phones a lot easier.
7) Page up, page down with the volume rocker?
Hmm, which buttons did I configure as "page up" and "page down?" Was it 1 and 2, or 6 & 9, or is it * and # like in X-plore?
I'd like to use the volume up/down buttons of the volume rocker to jump through long lists of files. Can this option be added to the configuration menu?
Am I asking too much? Or can I get away with another one?
8) Encryption
If I lose my phone, I don't want everyone to look into all my files. What about adding file encryption to ActiveFile? That would give me an extra reason to uninstall X-plore ![]()
